CHAMUSQUINA
Chamusquina is a small workshop dedicated to handmade textile lamps, founded in Barcelona in the early 1990s by interior designer Catalina Alós and Sarah Baumgartner. The name comes from the Spanish word chamuscar “to scorch”, a playful reference to the early days of the studio when, lacking experience with electrical components, some cables accidentally burned during their first prototypes.
From the beginning, the project focused on minimal forms and the quality of light. Their goal was to create lamps where the object itself almost disappears, leaving space for a soft, warm light filtered through fabric. The designs use simple materials such as iron structures, linen and cotton textiles, ribbons and cords, all cut, sewn and assembled by hand.
Over time, the designs evolved into lighter structures and textile shades suspended from cables or ribbons, creating lamps that feel both simple and poetic. Today the project continues as a small workshop where every piece is produced by hand using natural materials, maintaining a commitment to simplicity, responsible production and the quiet atmosphere created by light filtered through fabric.
