SERGIO BASI
Drawn to ceramics after encountering the quiet beauty of a tea bowl, this practice emerges from a decisive shift away from academic philosophy toward making with the hands. Trained with masters such as Ramon Fort, José Mariscal and Penélope Vallejo, the work is grounded in both technical rigor and conceptual depth.
The practice is driven by material research and the exploration of limits. Influenced by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, the pieces embrace imperfection, transformation and chance. Through experimental firings, smoke decoration, atypical glazes and deconstructed volumes, surfaces evolve unpredictably, revealing textures shaped by process rather than control.
Balancing the utilitarian and the ritual, these objects elevate everyday gestures into sensory experiences. Alongside studio work, this practice extends into teaching and curatorial activity as co-founder of Limbo Project in Barcelona, a multidisciplinary space dedicated to experimental ceramics, community and contemporary craft.
